Understanding the Condition of TMD

The jaw joints, or temporomandibular joints (TMJ), positioned on each side of the face are the most widely used joints in your body. As such, excessive biting force, overuse of the joints, or malpositioned teeth all contribute to TMJ problems, which are collectively known as Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD). Symptoms of TMD are disruptive and far-reaching, and include:

  • Facial and jaw pain or discomfort
  • Jaw locking in an open position
  • Difficulty eating or opening the mouth wide
  • Chronic migraines and headaches
  • Cracking, popping, or grinding noises
  • Ear, neck, shoulder, and upper back pain

Habitual Teeth Grinding Impacts Jaw Joint Health

While a number of factors may contribute to TMD, habitual teeth grinding (bruxism) is one of the more prevalent – and destructive. Frequent, persistent grinding of the teeth not only places undue pressure on the TMJ and surrounding muscles but it also wears down tooth structure to create discrepancies in the way the teeth come together upon closing.

An uneven bite invites further TMJ issues, tooth pain, gum recession, extensive wear of tooth structure (often into the second layer, or dentin) and future need of restorative treatment. Identifying a teeth grinding problem early on is important and may be corrected with an occlusal adjustment procedure.

With this simple service, Dr. Brad Camp gently removes uneven areas on chewing surfaces of teeth to allow the upper and lower arches to meet together properly. His advanced training with The Dawson Academy has given him a more thorough understanding of the joint system, which is critical in treating patients with various TMD problems.
